Benches

A song by the composer Jimmy Webb uses the lines ‘If these old walls could speak, of things that they remember well……these walls would have a tale to tell’. Does the same apply to benches? If they were able to relate the conversations of those to whom they have given rest there would be many a tale to tell and even more if they could relay the thoughts of those sitting alone watching the world go by.

I did not consciously set out to build a portfolio of pictures of people sitting on benches but over the years wandering the streets I increasingly notice and wonder about people occupying a place on a bench – who are they – where are they from - why are they there? Sometimes there is the opportunity to stop, chat and get the answers but the more natural images often come from not disturbing the thoughts or interrupting the conversation.
